Diane Williams paints
the spirit of horses
Equine artist Diane Williams works exclusively with oil on canvas,
applying vibrant thick layers and rich texture to her paintings.
British Columbia artist Diane Williams paints and photographs unique horses from around the world; the Sable Island wild horses off the coast of Nova Scotia, the ancient white Camargue horses from Southern France, and Andalusian and Lusitano horses from Portugal, Brazil, and Texas.
She enjoys painting commissions of beloved horses. She paints the white spirit bears from the Great Bear Rainforest in BC, the local landscapes of Alberta and British Columbia. Diane is a painting teacher sharing her vibrant color palette and technique of painting with students. She teaches how to paint horses, bears, and landscapes in vibrant color.
“I want my work to trigger strong, emotional responses,” Williams says. “For the viewer to feel as if she or he is entering the world of light the horses inhabit. I believe that these horses can help you heal or, perhaps, regain a sense of your inner exquisite self.”

Painting Lessons
Diane Williams teaches painting with a strong foundation on how to layer color, Students are guided through 4 stages of a painting from a vibrant simplistic base to refinement of each stage, finishing with an emphasis on a special detail of one part of the painting.
Her style is contemporary Impressionism. She encourages textured brushstrokes with classical composition and an emphasis on cropping into the essence of the subject, touching three sides of the canvas. Diane teaches private and group lessons.
Gallery
Equine artist Diane Williams has a lifelong passionate love affair with horses. With this comes a knowing of the depth of the relationship one can have with the soul of a horse. In her work, she invites the viewer to experience this relationship at an intimate level with his or her own encounters and emotions.
As an artist Diane works hard to integrate classical techniques, with contemporary, no black, brown or gray. She captures impressions of light through layers of brilliant oil color, wet on wet until finished. Her images start as a stark light/shadow rendering of pure pigment, detail evolving on eyes, ears, nostrils; looser as they expand to surrounding areas. In her cropping of her equine subjects she pares down the image to its most powerful essence.
"It is not about the horse as a whole or the background it takes space in, it is the piece that speaks to your heart".
